It’s Easy to Give Advice When You’re Not the One Paying the Bill

We all have that one person in our lives—the armchair philosopher who always knows the exact right move for your life. From the sidelines, everything looks simple. To them, quitting your toxic job, calling out a terrible boss, ending a long-term relationship, or starting a business in the middle of a crisis is a piece of cake.

It’s easy to be brave when you’re not the one at risk.

When it’s not your life, moralizing advice and theoretical solutions cost nothing. There’s no fear of failure, no threat of being unable to pay rent next month, and no sleepless nights staring at the ceiling wondering, "What now?" Talking a big game is effortless when you have nothing to lose.

Everything changes when you’re the one facing the pressure. Suddenly, the "right decision" isn't so black and white. You quickly see that there’s a big gap between theory and reality, and occasionally the best choice is just whatever helps you get through the day.

So next time someone tries to tell you what to do, just remind yourself: it’s easy to be the CEO of someone else’s life. The real challenge is living with the consequences of your own.
